The Canyon, the River

Donna on a Pre-River-Trip Hike on the South Kaibab Trail

One snake, one dory, five rafts, seven guides, fourteen nights, fourteen campsites, sixteen Sierra Clubbers, 280 miles.

Countless bighorn sheep, canyon wrens, great blue herons, riffles, waves, stars, avocados, things to learn.

Uncountable light, water, space, wind, sand.

February, four months later, the trip is present: sand in the car, still a stack of tent parts and jackets to wash, Belknap’s guide on my desk, dreams in the night.
